What This Place Is About

ArteTribal is a reference space dedicated to tribal and ethnic art, culture and traditions from around the world. From the geometric patterns of the Amazigh people of North Africa to the sacred tattoos of Polynesia, from the body art of the Amazon to the ancient symbols of the Balkans — this site exists to gather, contextualise and celebrate the visual and cultural heritage of the world’s indigenous peoples.

Why It Exists

Tribal art and culture are scattered across thousands of sources — academic papers, museum catalogues, travel blogs, niche forums. ArteTribal brings it together in one place, written for curious people rather than specialists. Whether you are looking for tattoo inspiration, planning a cultural trip, decorating your home with intention, or simply wanting to understand the world a little better — there is something here for you.

What You Will Find Here

The site covers a wide range of topics: the history and meaning of tribal tattoo traditions, profiles of artists inspired by indigenous art, guides to tribal cultures from every continent, travel experiences that go beyond tourism, home decor rooted in authentic craft traditions, and close readings of individual artworks and artefacts. A growing collection of articles on the Stories & Voices and Inspired by Tribal Art sections brings a human face to these traditions — real people, real work, real connections between the ancient and the contemporary.

How We Approach It

Every culture covered here is treated with respect and curiosity. We aim to explain rather than exoticise, to contextualise rather than appropriate. Where possible, we link to original sources, credit artists and communities, and acknowledge the complexity of writing about living traditions from the outside.

On Images and Generative AI

Most of the illustrations on this site are created using AI image generation tools. This is a deliberate choice: as an independent project, using AI allows us to have original, evocative visuals for every article without reproducing copyrighted photographs or artwork. Every image is generated specifically for the context of each piece, with care taken to represent cultures and peoples with dignity and respect.

We are aware of the limitations of AI imagery — and we are always working to improve the authenticity and cultural accuracy of the visuals we use.

If you have photographs, artwork or images that you feel would pair well with any of our articles — or that could inspire new ones — we would love to hear from you. We welcome contributions from photographers, artists, collectors and community members, provided the necessary rights and permissions are in place. Get in touch via our Contact page.

A note on image credits

We make every effort to credit images correctly and to respect the rights of photographers, artists and institutions whose work appears on this site. However, given the volume of content and the nature of an evolving project, we recognise that errors or omissions may occur. If you notice an image that is missing its credit, we sincerely apologise — please reach out via our Contact page with the correct attribution and we will add it as quickly as possible.

If you believe that any image on this site infringes a licence or copyright, we take such concerns seriously and will respond promptly. We are committed to removing or replacing any content upon a legitimate request. Our intention has never been to use anyone’s work without proper acknowledgement, and we are grateful to those who help us maintain the integrity of this project.

A Living Project

ArteTribal is a growing resource. New articles, new cultures and new perspectives are added regularly. If you have a suggestion, a correction or a story to share, we would love to hear from you — use the Contact page to get in touch.
